Feeling Confused About the 11+? You're Not Alone.
If you're new to the world of the 11+ exam, you’re likely hearing terms like “GL”, “CEM”, “verbal reasoning”, and “independent school entry” without much explanation.
This post will break things down simply and clearly, so you feel informed and confident as your child begins their journey.

📘 What Is the 11+ Exam?
The 11+ is an entrance exam taken by children in Year 5 or Year 6 who are applying for:
Grammar schools (state selective schools)
Independent/private schools
The exam typically takes place between September and January of Year 6.
🧠 What Subjects Are Covered?
This depends on the school, but most 11+ exams include a mix of the following:
English: comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and writing
Maths: number, word problems, reasoning and problem-solving
Verbal Reasoning: using logic and vocabulary to solve word puzzles
Non-Verbal Reasoning: solving puzzles with shapes, patterns, and codes
Some schools test only English and maths, while others include all four areas.
🏫 What’s the Difference Between Grammar and Independent School Exams?
Grammar Schools: Usually use standardised tests (GL or CEM)
Independent Schools: Often have their own bespoke tests, which may include a creative writing paper and an interview.
Every school is different so it's important to check individual admissions pages.
📅 When Should My Child Start Preparing?
Most families begin tuition in Year 4 or early Year 5, allowing plenty of time to:
Build strong foundations in core subjects
Practise exam-style questions
Develop confidence and exam technique
A slow and steady approach is far better than a last-minute cram.
👩🏫 How Can a Tutor Help?
An 11+ tutor provides:
Personalised teaching tailored to your child’s pace and ability
Targeted support in weaker areas
Strategies for tackling tricky reasoning questions
Regular feedback and encouragement
Most importantly, I help children believe in themselves because confidence is just as important as knowledge.
✅ Final Thoughts
The 11+ can open exciting doors but it doesn't have to feel daunting. With the right information and support, your child can feel confident and prepared.
